The Great Sequoias of California

By Anna and Elisabeth

Amanda accurately expresses our excitement to be back in familiar territory...the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, specifically two quaint towns. Some good friends were the first to welcome us back to Angels Camp, California with a pizza dinner. It was so good to catch up after 8 years!

One of our favorite stops in this neck of the woods, was Big Trees State Park. Some dear friends came with us as we explored the majestic towers.

Christina and Daniel admire the grand trees. As you can see, a group of good friends do not even span the width of these huge trunks!

Before actually starting on the 5-mile hike, we enjoyed a picnic lunch.

The girls found a large log over a ravine on which to eat. Looks like the fellows to the right are having some amusing dispute--over food???

The back-pack buddies (left). Looks like someone is not too thrilled with the arrangement.

The scenery was absolutely beautiful and tranquil! Walking through such mighty forests was quite refreshing and breathtaking.

Not only were the sequoias taller than any other average tree, but they also made for great tunnels and hideouts.

Can you see anything special hidden in the picture above? Look close, there is a little guy sitting at the base of the giant.

The photos are just pictures and any words of description fall short--you must see these giants yourself!

And to point out the greatness of these towers, just think of a huge tree that has the scars of a blazing fire that hollowed out the bigger portion of its internal strength, yet it still stands tall and alive!

Someone knows how to take family snap-shots...no, the one below (left) is not posed!

Such tall trees proclaim the process of growth. Their green leaves tell of life flowing within their veins. Their strength reflects the power of the majesty of their Creator. Surely, it must have took something big from which these giants could sprout...

...But no, it took just a tiny seed, intricately designed by a Master Creator to sprout and grow into a world wonder!

On the way back, two bears were spotted. One youngster actually made it on photograph! (left)

About ten years ago, our family had our picture taken on "the big stump". Now, we came back and got a photo in the same spot! That stump is one, big piece of wood!

"Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein:
then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice
 Before the Lord:for he cometh,
for he cometh to judge the earth:
he shall judge the world with righteousness,
and the people with his truth."
~ Psalm 96:12-13 ~
